Bruce Harvey Law Office
Atlanta, Georgia

-
Bruce Harvey is one of the most respected criminal defense attorneys in Atlanta. He is a legal pioneer, who has been called "a rebel with a reputation for honesty, a subversive invigorated by judicial ideals." The office is located in a two-story storefront building, dating from 1924 adjacent to the historical Fairlie Poplar district of downtown Atlanta. It accomodates Mr. Harvey and his staff of attorneys, a conference room, a library, rental space for additional attorneys who operate independently, and work areas for support staff.
The geometry of the plan, which is open but provides for needed privacy and controlled access, is derived from the confluence of the different geometric grids which regulate the configuration of the building shell and the street pattern of downtown Atlanta.
Like Harvey himself, the office projects a dramatic image which is familiar and comfortable, yet unique and ambiguous. The rich palette of varied textures is derived from inexpensive traditional building materials such as exposed wood studs, fiberglass and black iron sheet metal, which have been altered and removed from their normal context. The new construction contrasts with the exisiting building shell, which has been left unaltered to produce a tension between the old and the new. A two story entry wall leads to the heart of the plan, which is a cantilevered wood stair that accommodates the legal library and is lit from above by a new skylight.
