This work explores dynamic patterns occurring within the environment. Dynamic exchanges, which permeate all of nature, involve the interaction of elements, which cause form and patterns to result. Form describes an entity but pattern deals not only with entities but also with the relationships between entities. Accounting for the space between forms, pattern reveals a field of movement where nature actually creates openings in and in between forms to allow aliveness to perpetuate. Patterns are records of shape and movement that can transfer to various scales and elemental matter. Whether cellular, atmospheric or celestial, patterns evidence the fleeting in transformation and trace potential becoming manifest.
In this installation, my work looks to dynamic patterns in the atmosphere. Patterns of atmospheric conditions during a hurricane were mapped using the technology of satellite Doppler radar imaging. This technology shows changing wind, water and light making an image of a certain time and space. It registers how light operates on the water in the atmosphere evidencing the exchange. Whether DNA unfurling, a hurricane whirling or a galaxy forming, an implied spiral is revealed in the naturally occurring phenomenon. Detectable only through pattern as elements of matter caught in the wake of an exchange of energy, the imperative of the spiral was chosen due to the location of sunlight and the verticality of the specific gallery context. A model of the proposed installation, relief models and paintings were executed in the process. A painting of the mapped image was placed on the floor of the three-story well like space of the gallery. Shapes found within the painting were cut, suspended by transparent cable then distributed in a spiral lifting into the three-story space. It becomes a re-contextualized exchange constructed within the gallery. From sunlight above and artificial light below, the installation connects to the existing space and is activated by the changing light and shadows at different times of day. Through the disciplines of art and architecture, observed patterns become spatial. They become a passage that operates on one’s perceptions. The installation includes body, space and time in perception. The re-contextualized patterns form a new environment to be experienced.
